Midpt

Privacy Policy

The short version

Midpt is built to be as forgettable as possible. We don't require accounts, we don't save your street address, and we don't sell anything to anyone. We store the coordinates of the address you enter (latitude and longitude) so we can calculate the midpoint between everyone in a group. That's it.

What we collect

  • Coordinates only. When you enter an address, we convert it into a latitude/longitude pair and discard the original street address. We do not store "123 Main St, Apt 4" — we store something like 43.6532, -79.3832.
  • The name you type (so your friends know who joined the Midpt).
  • The Midpt itself (the group, destination type, and the participants' coordinates).
  • Aggregate location votes. We keep track of upvotes and downvotes on suggested spots so the group can see which places are most popular. We do not track who cast each vote — only the total count.
  • Basic technical data (browser type, approximate timing of requests) used to keep the service running and prevent abuse.

What we don't collect

  • Your street address.
  • Your email, phone number, or password — there are no accounts.
  • Your device's GPS location (we only use what you type in).
  • Anything for advertising. We don't run ads and don't use tracking pixels.

Third parties

We use Google Maps Platform (Maps, Places, and Geocoding APIs) to convert the address you enter into coordinates and to display the map and find nearby spots. Your starting point is sent to Google transiently to return the result; we only store the coordinates Google returns. Use of Google Maps is subject to Google's Privacy Policy.

Cookies & local storage

Midpt doesn't use tracking cookies or advertising pixels. We do use your browser's localStorage to remember which Midpt you've joined and your participant token, so you can vote and edit your address without re-entering anything. This data never leaves your device unless you take an action (like voting). Clearing your browser storage will sign you out of any Midpts you joined.

Sharing

Anyone with a Midpt link can see the participants' names and the computed midpoint and suggested spots. They cannot see your original address — only the coordinate point on the map. Treat the link like a group chat invite: share it with people you'd want to meet up with.

Deletion & leaving

Guests can leave a Midpt at any time from the Midpt page — your coordinates and votes are removed immediately. Hosts can delete the entire Midpt the same way, which wipes every participant's data and breaks the shared link. If you need help, email contact@midpt.ca.

Changes

If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. Significant changes will be noted on the home page.
